In February 2026, the Kyle of Sutherland Development Trust (KoDST) and the Highland Good Food Partnership launched a new community composting initiative using a Joraform JK270 tumbler composter designed initially to process raw fruit and veg scraps only. The composter was installed within the community garden and polytunnel area, creating a visible and practical demonstration site for local food waste reduction in Ardgay.

The project began on a small scale to allow the team to test systems, monitor inputs, and build confidence among local participants before expanding. Since launching, eight local residents have signed up to contribute their food waste, helping establish an early community collection network.

Participants weigh and track the food waste they contribute, allowing the team to gather data on diversion rates and compost production. Oversight and record-keeping are being coordinated by Marieke, who is monitoring the system’s performance and helping ensure the composting process runs effectively.

By locating the composter within the community growing space, the project connects waste reduction directly with food growing and soil health. The compost produced will support the garden and polytunnel, demonstrating a circular local food system where nutrients are returned to the soil rather than lost through disposal.

The initiative also provides a practical engagement opportunity for residents to learn about composting, food waste reduction, and community-scale climate action. As participation grows, KoDST hopes to expand the volume and variety of materials accepted and use the project as a model for wider neighbourhood composting activity in Ardgay.
